About the Z-Ratings
The Z-Ratings are a proprietary composite ranking metric designed to evaluate and compare volleyball programs across any competition level.
Unlike traditional ranking systems, the Z-Rating moves beyond simple win-loss records by incorporating multiple layers of competitive context to produce a more complete and fair assessment of a team's true strength.
Ratings are calculated using a multi-variable algorithm that accounts for both a team's performance and the competitive environment in which that performance occurred. A minimum match threshold is required before a program becomes eligible to receive a rating, ensuring statistical reliability across all ranked teams.
The Z-Ratings were developed as a more equitable alternative to conventional metrics — including the NCAA's Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) — which have long been criticized for oversimplifying team evaluation.
